Get over yourself!
On my recent holiday, I watched as vendors walked the beach trying to make a little money by selling snacks and drinks to sunbathers. I wondered how it felt to be constantly approaching people on the off-chance that they would want what you were selling.
And then I realised that I have to do pretty much the same thing.
There are very many differences between me and those beach vendors, my circumstances and theirs, but the need to sell isn’t one of them.
Selling is not a particularly enjoyable part of my work and I’m not particularly comfortable with it. But in order to fulfil my mission to coach people to make good, informed decisions about their career choices at 50+, I first need to sell them my services.
So as I watched those vendors at work, I thought: ‘Get over yourself, Rachel! If your biggest discomfort is having to market your services repeatedly, from the comfort of your home office, then your life is pretty sweet. Selling not only enables you to provide what people need, but also to do what you enjoy and what you’re good at. It’s a necessary means to a valuable and rewarding end. So just get on with it.’
Because if you don’t tell people what you’re selling and make it visible and available to them, then they can’t buy it when they need it.
And so …
If you, too, are feeling reflective about your work or career after your own summer break - if you've had a moment of realisation and want to talk things through confidentially with a qualified professional, in a structured and supportive way - I’m selling THAT.

Because sometimes we just have to get over ourselves.
Not thirsty or hungry right now? Don’t worry: I’ll be back along to ask again before you know it.
