What’s your Concorde?
Back in the early 2000s, when I was writing a thesis, I used to ensure an energetic and productive start to my work day by promising myself a treat if I had put down, say, 500 words by the time Concorde flew overhead at 11am. It didn’t matter whether the words were any good; the only thing that mattered was that they were on the computer and not in my head when I heard that thrilling sound.
It was a great way of counteracting my inclination to get everything in place before starting to think and write.
It also meant that I had some material to work with for the rest of the day.
And it gave me a sense of satisfaction early on, which then carried me through.
I miss Concorde. It was beautiful, and it helped me form some good habits, which shape my current working practices.
Because ‘I’ll do this by then’ is so much more effective than ‘I’ll do this when ...’
If I had procrastinated until Concorde had flown over, I’d have wasted two or so hours of good work time each day, and had less time and material to play with afterwards.
So, what’s your Concorde? And what do you want to get done before it flies over?

If you have been procrastinating about getting ideas about the future of your work and career out of your head and into a space where you can explore them, test them and do something with them, it’s my job to help you do that.
If you’d like to start before 11am (metaphorically), get in touch here. You can get going this very month and treat yourself to a positive future.
(And, yes, I did set myself - and meet - the challenge of writing and posting this before 11am today 😀)
